Cool Stuff!

I just started poking around YouTube for some Native American music, but I wanted to find a clip that syncretized the traditional music with the modern world. I came across Jana Mashonee. Her first album, Flash of a Firefly, was a 2006 Nammy Award winner. Did you know the Native American Music Awards even existed? Also, her album, American Indian Story, was nominated for a Grammy in 2007. I attached “The Medicine Woman’s Vision” from the album below:

Mashonee also compiled an album of Christmas songs, but she sang them in native languages. “O Holy Night,” which she sang in Navajo, had a transcription that I thought was neat. I pasted it below the video clip so you can follow along!

O Holy Night (Written in Navajo)

Hodiyin tł’ée’go Sǫ’ bee da’dinnídíingo Áko Yisdá’iiníiłii bi’dizhchį́ Diné ti’dahooníhę́ę baazhníyáago Bijéí biyi’di haa bił dahóózhǫǫd ’Áádóó ch’ééh deeskai yę́ę bił nídahoozhǫǫd Háálá chohoo’̨́ bee ’adideezdláád Yaa ’ádaahnééh diyingo nidaal’a’í ’Éí deísółts’ą́ą́’! I wish there was some way for me to insert sound clips because the next thing I discovered is truly amazing. It’s actually another blog on Blogger called Analog Africa. Samy Ben Redjeb travels to Africa and hunts down West African music. His latest album focuses on the music of Luanda. He has sound clips from every album he’s released in the series. I like “Macongo Me Chiquita” from the ninth release. I’ll leave a link to that specific page (http://analogafrica.blogspot.com/2010/10/blog-post.html), but feel free to roam around the entire blog.

This last clip is from the documentary, “Playing for Change: Peace Through Music.” It encompasses a wide variety of musical cultures, but African countries are particularly prevalent. There is even some African “clicking” incorporated into the song.

  1. Meagan, I really liked the videos you posted. Thanks! Jana has a gorgeous voice, it's so rich and full. It's pretty interesting that she took the time to translation those carols into the Navajo language. And thanks for posting the link to Analog Africa blog. I listened to one of the tracks on the upcoming CD for Angola, and it was really catchy! It was almost calypso-sounding. :_

  3. I really enjoyed your "Cool Stuff"! Jana's songs are beautiful! I must say that I enjoyed the Playing for Change video the most. It is amazing how technology allows people to sing at different times in different locations around the world to make one song. How far the world has come!

  4. Some fun stuff, Meagan. I actually really like the last video the best, especially where it pairs the sitar with a National guitar! And the tabla in the beginning are nifty as well. Make sure to look back at this video after we go through the music of India.

  5. One Love: I love the concept behind these videos. It's a beautiful message. All of the technology available today should be used for purposes like this one. Call me biased, but I really liked hearing a bass sing one of the opening verses. Music, in general, is meant to bring people together. This group was actually on The Tonight Show last year when Conan O'Brien was hosting (they performed "Stand By Me"). Will the world be totally united one day? An extremely long shot at best, but as long as there are always people who try, maybe we'll get as close as we can.

  6. I love Jana Mashonee so thanks so much for this post Meagan! I have the Christmas album and on her Facebook page (www.facebook.com/janamashonee) she said over the holidays that she studied with Elders from each Tribe to learn the carols in each Native language. From the posts by other fans who speak those languages it seems that she's right on in every one. It's a beautiful album. I'm pretty partial to her new one New Moon Born. I like her R&B and A Change is Gonna Come really shows off her vocal abilities. She has one of the great voices of today, I just love it. From all the posts she does on her FB page she's really great and grounded. Thanks so much for this post!
